Follow in the footsteps of the manufacturer and the workers. Their living conditions were vastly different, yet inextricably intertwined.
Travel back in time to the cradle of industry at Brede Værk. Along the way, we delve into Denmark’s industrialization while getting a taste of life at Brede Værk.
The cradle of Danish industry

Brede Textile Mill was once the largest industrial complex along the Mølleåen stream – an area often called the cradle of Danish industry. As early as the Middle Ages, the water in the stream powered watermills, which later developed into industrial mills.
In 1832, a textile factory moved here and grew into one of the country’s leading textile manufacturers. Its remote location meant that a factory community emerged, where the owner took responsibility for the workers’ lives both during and outside working hours. Today, Brede stands as a living testament to Danish industrial history – a place where you can still sense how work, housing, and community were once closely intertwined.

A society within society
Brede Værk was a small community in itself, with everything a working family needed. The tour takes place mainly outdoors in the factory grounds and around the large factory buildings that formed the heart of Brede Værk. But you will also get the unique experience of entering Brede Main Building, where the factory director lived with his family, and the more modest but efficient workers’ housing.
